Does anyone really know what ‘Memorial’ Day means?
For me, it started when I was in England around the month of November. Everywhere you looked someone was wearing a poppy, even as a service member I had no idea what this was about and I honestly didn’t think much of it. I always thought that it was pretty cool how most of the people wore one. Hell, I thought it was just an English thing. Time went on and it always stayed in the back of my mind, I didn’t look into it until after I was already out of the Air Force and something brought it to my attention. I decided to educate myself and found that the poppy is a symbol of Remembrance Day also know as Armistice Day or Veterans Day/November 11th. The poppy was worn in memory of fallen soldiers. The VFW Buddy Poppy program dates back to 1922 and we are proud to continue that tradition. On January 27th volunteers and veterans from all over came together for the second annual North County Veteran’s Stand Down. This four-day event, hosted at Green Oak Ranch, helps our homeless veterans with services, resources, and a place to stay.
